Rajeev Ram, ex numero uno del mondo in doppio, ha concluso la sua illustre carriera da giocatore allo US Open 2026, uscendo in semifinale nel tabellone maschile. Il tennista statunitense, che con il britannico Joe Salisbury ha realizzato l'unico tris consecutivo vincente nella storia del doppio maschile dello US Open, ha affidato lunedì ai social il suo commiato ufficiale, con un messaggio che sottolinea come i sogni possano diventare realtà.
Il congedo dopo oltre vent’anni
Nel suo saluto, Ram ha dichiarato: "All good things must come to an end, and with a whole host of emotions that I say goodbye to my playing career".
Riflettendo sull'inizio della sua avventura nel tennis, ha sottolineato: "The reality is that all of this started as just a game. I always thought tennis could be a sport for life for me, but I never envisioned that it would make my life". La sua motivazione principale per oltre due decenni è stata la costante ricerca del miglioramento: "There were many wins and losses along the way, but I always felt like my purpose in this game was to simply work to be better today than I was yesterday. That was my driving force, my why, and the thing that kept me going for more than two decades. And I had the time of my life doing so".
La carriera di Ram si chiude con un palmarès eccezionale: sei titoli del Grande Slam (quattro doppio maschile, due doppio misto), tra cui i tre trionfi consecutivi allo US Open con Joe Salisbury (2021-2023).
Ha raggiunto la prima posizione nel ranking ATP di doppio nel 2022 e vinto sei titoli Masters. Due medaglie d'argento olimpiche (doppio misto con Venus Williams 2016, doppio maschile con Austin Krajicek 2024) arricchiscono il suo percorso. Vanta inoltre due ATP Finals consecutive con Salisbury (2022-2023), 511 vittorie ATP in doppio, 32 titoli ATP di specialità e 26 presenze consecutive nel doppio maschile dello US Open. È stato anche un elemento importante della squadra statunitense di Coppa Davis.
Gratitudine e futuro nel tennis di base
A Flushing Meadows, Ram aveva già espresso profonda gratitudine: "I got to play this game because other people cared enough about me to make it possible. That’s the reality of it".
Ha ringraziato famiglia e allenatori per il supporto: "It starts with my parents, and then it was the coaches I had. I was really lucky."
